I would like to acknowledge Mr. Tyson on his 21st. Congratulations good sir and I refuse to say happy birthday on facebook, I would call you but you're way the fuck over there not in America. So, treat them ladies well tonight, I'll have a beer or 5 for you. --Conservative Joe 20 March 2009

Well, if anyone reads this, just wanted to let you know that I'm coming home very soon. --Ott0 04 October 2008

  • Dude, how soon? and for how long? (I still read midnight everyday btw). --Zm73 06 October 2008
  • Dude, let us know. Call one of us. Email anyone. Let us know what's up! We all want to hear from you. BTW, SB on Halloween is happening this year so you and everyone else should come down.

I've been home now for a few days. Damn it's weird to be back. My business failed (fuck). My financial backer is a retard. SB on Halloween sounds pretty sweet though, that would be like on the 31st right? I don't have a mobile phone atm but I will be getting one soon. I'm probably home now for good, or at least for approximately 2 years. --Ott0 11 October 2008

  • Otto, its so good to hear from you. I thought midwiki was dead because the home page was not loading right, but im glad i clicked on "recent changes" and saw that it's still alive. Why did you go back to china? What are you going to do now that you're back? Are you even allowed to go back to stanford? I hope we can all meet in SB for halloween...that would be sweet. -Marisa
  • Yeah, so are you guys still going to SB for halloween? I need to get people's numbers again cuz I cracked the screen on my cellphone 3 or so months ago. I've been working a lot recently... trying to recuperate some of the money I lost over there. But I hope we can meet up. --Ott0 29 October 2008

Midnight?

What happened to Midnightwiki recently? It was down for a few weeks there. Also, that hippo video is not around. Is the Chinese govt. cracking down on this wonderful oasis of democracy and free thinking?? - --Zm73 26 August 2008

Well, not quite. The server had to be repartitioned so it was down for a while while that was happening. (The server resides in the states so it's safe from the commies... for now.) There is some very bad news though which I have to apologize to you all for. Due to my stupidity, all of the new forum posts for the last few months were lost. I dunno what to say except 1. shit and 2. sorry. At the moment they're all gone but I will try to get the old ones back asap. Also, I just want to say that although midwiki is in somewhat of a dark-ages these days, sometime in the future (might be like a year from now) there will be a spiritual rebirthing and a new midwiki, the likes of which the people have never seen, will emerge as if shat from the holy anus of heaven.

In other news, I just got back from a friggen adventure to my old city of residence, hangzhou, to try to get the insurance money from when I broke my leg. Didn't get it. I also got mugged in a dark alley (sliced at with a little knife that nipped me in the elbow, wallet/money stolen, FUCK you wherever you two dickheads are right now). Yeah the first guy ran off with my wallet and I grabbed the other guy instinctively to try to keep him from escaping. I shouted "they stole my things!" and held onto the guy. But then I thought, oh crap, what if he has a knife too, so I kinda let him go plus he was struggling for his life so he prolly woulda gotten away no matter what. And so he got away but I ripped his shirt off before he could go. Damn, in retrospect I wish I'd just immediately kicked him in the balls as hard as I effing could, then tried to punch/kick him, etc.

sincerely, --Ott0 03 September 2008

Yep, I'm alive. My visa will be expiring at the end of August so we'll see what happens. I don't think I'm quite ready to come back and go to school yet though; I might have to try to figure out a way to stay a little longer. I already won't be making it back in time for the start of next school year though. I'm getting ready for the olympics baby.

Well, I'll call ppl and wake them up to see if they want to get together for morning food. --Conservative Joe 18 August 2007

Fuck you SFO

SFO you lost my trust. A 16+ hour journey from the Eastern Bloc is never fun, and troubles at the beginning left me very weary but glad when I was nearing your bayside runways; I thought all the badness was behind me. But no! You decided to leave a bunch of your equipment carelessly strewn inside a clearly marked plane parking spot. Even the pilot was pissed as he explained to his passengers why he had to stop mere feet from the relief of the gangplank. After much too long my fellows and I were let out of our aluminium cage only to find that delay had resulted in us being at the end of a very large queue of Thais getting through passport control. This would not have been so utterly insulting if the line for U.S. Citizens had not overflowed far into the hall while visiting foreign nationals were able to cruise through with no wait at all. Glad to see that America cares about its citizens. Then came the endless questions from the customs officers. "Yes officer, I'm a student. Yes I know the name of my school and my major. You will not trick me you sneaky mother fuckers." O.K. so I dealt with that and got my bags, finally I'm done. Not so! "Sir, please go to that stand over there while the rest of these people just walk on by to freedom." At the stand more questions. "Yes, I still know who I am, but you almost got me that time." Now SFO, you searched all my bags rather thoroughly (while refusing to answer why) and let me go on my way almost 2 hours after the plane landed. And I still sneaked all my sneakables past you, so fuck you. I'll think of you when I'm flying the "friendly skys" over countries that give more of a shit about me than you do. Oh yeah, and I had a much better experience at Heathrow, and that's sad because everyone knows Heathrow is shit. (BTW, good job to Heathrow. Very nice.) --Zm73 14 August 2007

Where in the world is Zm73

Ok, so some ppl have been asking for a kinda updatey type thing on what I've been doing this whole summer. So here is a brief version. After getting accustomed to the homely feel and totally awesome food of the Eastern Bloc (Poland) I spent my days cruising around Warszawa and spending money like I had a 3:1 exchange rate in my favour. In Old Town they have organ concerts on this really famous organ and we went twice because it was so awesome. After two weeks of that me and my lady hopped across the channel to England. There we started off in the London suburb of Ealing, which just so happens to be the center of Polish whatnot outside of Poland. After spending a week cruising London and hoarding money like I had a 2:1 exchange rate against me we took a train to jolly old Liverpool to visit my grandmother. Oh yeah, and while we were in London we saw Shakspeare's Love's Labour's Lost at none other than the Globe Theatre (standing admission only 5 quid and we were seriously leaning on the stage!). So back in Liverpool we saw ther seriously awesome Liverpool Cathedral, which is the biggest in the UK, and some wierd building that had a portion of its outer wall that rotated 360*. Next came a coach to York where we reaped the pleasures of scrumptious fudge, good Ales, and some (finally!) good weather. After York we took a train all the way up to Edinburgh. In Edinburgh we stayed at some dingy old hostel that had been taken over by a gang of underemployed, overdrinking, always-swearing Polish students. Edinburgh turned out to be a little dissapointing. There wasn't too much to do and we were there for a long time so it got kinda boring. The notable events would have to be buying some whiskey from a guy who was way to excited about whiskey, going to St. Andrews for a day a czecking out some sweet ruins, and the fact that it must be the law in Edinburgh that no matter where you are or what time it is you can always hear bagpipes. To get back we had to take a 10 hour bus ride from Edinburgh to London, and let me tell you 10 hours on a plane is nothing compared to 10 hours on a bus. After a quick day in London to rest we were back in the air heading east. So, after 2 weeks of living off baked beans on toast our adventure was half way over.

Back in Poland we rested for a few days and then took a train to Krakow, which was the old capital of Poland. Apart from the fact that the people in Krakow were total jerks the stay was enjoyable. The hostel we were at was called Goodbye Lenin and was themed like Poland before the fall of Communism, so that was cool. Also in Krakow we went to see this really old salt mine and got an awesome tour that took us deep underground and showed us a huge underground chapel carved entirely out of salt. Also there were all these sweet doors carved into the salt with elaborate frames. It was total Moria status all over the place. Another weird thing in Krakow, it's pretty close to Auschwitz and the number of old, German tourists getting on tourbusses to Auschwitz was disturbing. After Krakow we trained it south to Zakopane which is right at the foot of the Tatry mountains. The locals here were very nice and I aquired a taste for Polish beer, which is also very nice. After a few days we went backpacking in the Tatry national park. Ask me about this in person because there's too much to write, but let me just say it was very steep and the mountains were very jagety. Oh, and I hiked into Slavokia just for the hell of it. So now I'm back in Warszawa and am taking advantage of some much needed rest. That's all there is to say now and I look forward to seeing hopefully all of you when I get back (the 14th). --Zm73 06 August 2007

  • That's nuts. Does your lady speak polish? --Ott0 06 August 2007

Yes, and I forgot to add that I will be bringing back a special treat that may or may not be illegal and may or may not be alcholic. --Zm73 06 August 2007

Writing Contest

Threepaths, you obviously don't know evan. his submission definitely wasnt a "mockery" of everyone's previous submissions. that is how he writes, so accept it. have you even seen his other entries? october's entry: "I was walking./I saw a ghost./Then it bit me." -Evan. and february/march: "F=ma" -Evan. I've taken English with Evan for three years and I know how he writes. I guess he's not as gifted a writer as some other geniuses on this site. I mean, of course they're short and don't really have a lot to say, but you can't discriminate against it. Plus it's a freakin' writing contest, not an elitist literary display. if you don't like his work then just don't make him the winner. dont have to kick him out or rag on him. this is a place for everyone. --peaches 06 May 2007

Alright, I just have a minute so I'll make this short. I didn't kick him out, I merely expressed my opinion. And, if I may ask, what exactly are the parameters for this little contest? Do we have anything to go on other than the personal opinions of the judges? And if the judge (namely me) chooses to express his displeasure at a particular submission, that's the judge's choice. I'm not saying that Evan doesn't alway write like that, I'm just saying that his particular submissions don't strike me as ones which contains any real effort or commitment to them. What I'm trying to say is that the judge has the right to rag on whatever the hell he chooses, and people have to be aware of that. I didn't make a fuss of his other submissions because I wasn't the judge, it wasn't my place to say anything. But last month, when I was the judge, I had the opportunity to speak my mind, and I took that opportunity. But whatever, I gotta run. --Threepaths 06 May 2007

I had a semester of English with the EKNmeister. I read his Heart of Darkness essay. He is a good writer. He is a clever guy. Sometimes too clever. One look at his submission history will tell you he isn't living up to his MWP (midnightwikipotential, duh). If you look at the past writing contests you can see that damn, most peeps have actually been putting some effort into their submissions. How long do you think it took the knave to create his masterpiece "F=ma - Evan"? I'll tell you. 2.5 seconds. Imagine if he spent 10 minutes on a submission. I bet it would be pretty thought provoking. Now not everybody has 10 minutes to spare on some dumb website so I too would encourage him to continue to produce his more trivial entries on the grounds that any submission is better than no submission, but you can't get angry at us for expressin' ourselves. Hell, it's more fun to criticize than to accolade. Sorry EKN for referring to you in the 3rd person.

Edit: just read the latest submission and I'm gonna have to say it's a step up. Congrats. --Ott0 07 May 2007

So, I am excited for this summer. I just got back from midnight bowling and scored an 80 and a 158. Needless to say, there's much room for improvement. ==Conservative Joe 01 May 2007

Glad there's interest. This is only in the speculation phase but if it comes into fruition there would be no initial investment required of you. You'd be responsible for getting the goods from port to shops or direct to consumer, and maybe doing some marketing on your end (find new customers, do promotion, etc). I'd say there's a 10-15% chance this will actually happen. --Ott0 09 April 2007

THE INCIDENT RETURNS!

Unbelievable

Holy shit. Czech out this recent news report. I seriously can't believe the balls some people have. When will people realize that if you use the internet you're going to have to deal with a fair share of jerks and assholes? What's more, if you decide to talk about your life and opinions in the "blogosphere" you should realize that everyone else there has their own very strong opinions and probably be dicks about it. And when they say "oooh, it's harder for women to blog..." it is complete bullox! The beauty of the interenet is that you are exactly who you say you are. So if people know your gender thats becuse you told them (probably for your own self-serving, martyrish reasons). And now people are calling for a re-evaluation of the blogging subculture! I really don't give a damn about the blogging subculture, but I do give a big damn about any form of censorship on the internet. Goddamnit, if you can't stand the heat get out of the fucking kitchen, I, for one, am not going to loose any sleep over one less blogger. --Zm73 28 March 2007

  • Yeah, I see your point, but I would like to point out that discrimination towards women is really something that should be looked at on a society wide level. Not in subcultures. As for the internet, you're right. Don't fucking censor. Ever. --Zarkov Atreas 28 March 2007
    • Tyson, I don't want to sound like EKN, but 'towards' isn't a word. BTW. And I am still working on my response to the global warming thing. --24.185.216.231 29 March 2007

Very well said. --Ott0 28 March 2007

  • Ever? ott0. Ever? Like when you wanted to censor the front page?--24.185.216.231 29 March 2007
  • Actually my response was directed at Zm's original commentary. I should have made that clearer I guess. And yes, theoretically, I support the idea that censorship might be a good idea in some very limited cases. Most of the time it's bad. But what if you had the chance to go back in time and censor Hitler? You could save the lives of millions. --Ott0 30 March 2007
  • Low blow. I am tired of using Hitler as an example for morality. And Joe, sign in. I'll use towards as much as I damn well please.
  • Yeah Joe, towards actually is an acceptable word. I looked it up in the dictionary. Zarkov, why are you tired of using Hitler as an example? I mean, it's such a good one. I think it's healthy to test your believes (i.e. in 100% free speech) on an extreme situation like Hitler. Sometimes then you can see that life isn't usually 100% anything. Feel free to disagree. --Ott0 31 March 2007
  • I can see the use in a moral foil like Hitler, but I think what I'd like to see is that hand played less, or at least use different people. Like Mussolini, Mao, or Stalin. Mix it up. --Zarkov Atreas 01 April 2007

Besides pissing me off, their logic that is the cause of their antiness is childish at best. "You do know that anybody can change it?" is a common defense they throw up. Well, I am asking you guys on how to respond to this in an intelligent way to show them the light if you will, and one that won't cause them to throw up their walls. --Conservative Joe 19 March 2007

  • remind them that there are people like my roommate out there, who have nothing better to do than scour wikipedia checking for "vandalism" -EKN
    • My Oceanography Professor totally stands by Wikipedia as a good source for information. You've got to admit, coming from him, that's a bg deal. --Zarkov Atreas 20 March 2007

Global Warming

Is the global warming scare of today equivilent to the red scare of yesterday? Meaning, it's actually nothing and we just make it a big deal. --Conservative Joe 16 March 2007

  • No. -Zm
    • took the words right out of my mouth Zm... -EKN
  • No, and I can offer more evidence than you will ever want to look at. The Fourth IPPC report just recently came out (Wikipedia has a good summary) and stated that they are more than 95% certain that global warming is occuring and that it is attributable to human causes. Actually, no one argues about whether it is true or not, all the bickering is really about why it is happening, and if it is something to be worried about. Sea levels are currently rising a few millimeters a year and there is a highly likely link between the increase in hurricane intensity and rising oceanic/global temperatures. Volcanic output, solar variation, and meteorlogical variations such as the North Atlantic Oscillation are not attributable, and in reaity are largely negligible. As for the sea level changes, this may not sound like that much, but over a few hundered years this translates into big problems, espcecially for states like Florida which apparently have a high point of 60ft. Out of all the promenent, respected scientists in the limnogical and oceanographic field only one of them is skeptical as to the reason behind global warming. I think his name is Murphy. I can offer you some literature if you'd like. This pwnage was brought to you by --Zarkov Atreas 16 March 2007
    • Joe, where is the rebuttal? I am ready.

Wow, it's been almost a month and Conservative Joe has been, dare I say, too scared to too afraid to write a rebuttal! Finals indeed! --Zarkov Atreas 12 April 2007

Party At Joe's?

I was thinking of having a party/get together at my house on Saturday the 24th. Is that good with you all? --Conservative Joe 09 March 2007

  • I'm home right now. My break is earlier, sooooooo no. it doesn't work for me. -EKN
  • I'll be there. --Ott0 10 March 2007 (jk)
    • Can this be a party for my birthday? -Zarkov

JOE IS BACK--Kris 21 March 2007

New Daily Forecast

Anybody want to write a new one? I'm getting kinda embarrased about the crap (written by me) that's been up there for so long. To top that off everyone in my family now knows about this site and they're all registered..haha. So whoever writes one will be the automatic winner of the writing contest this month. --Ott0 08 March 2007

Cool, Threepaths actually came through (or just coincidentally wrote one after this message). --Ott0 10 March 2007

Coincidental, I'm afraid, though I do like how well I fit into your plans. --Threepaths 11 March 2007

Spampede

The last assignment in my CS class had me write an applet of the classic snake game. Besides basic controls we also had to implement an AI spam finder (the targets are spam), and I decided to add some extra stuff myself. So just to show it off I posted it here. Have fun with it and make sure to try the berzerker state!. --Zm73 07 March 2007

  • very nice man... I like. although i don't quite understand the berzerker mode, because every time i enter it i lose control of the snake thingy. -EKN
  • Ya, you're supposed to. It turns your snake into a spam-crazed beast for a few seconds.--Zm73 07 March 2007
  • I can't do it. It doesn't load on my screen. --Conservative Joe 07 March 2007
  • Make sure you have the latest version of Java. --Zm73 07 March 2007
  • I did, and same problem. --Conservative Joe 07 March 2007
  • Dunno, it kills the browser on this computer (windowz) so I can't see it. How do you like java? You know you're spoiled right? Garbage collection is such a nice feature... we hard-core c/c++ cats have to live without it. Not that I'm hard-core anymore I haven't programmed for a good 6 months. --Ott0 08 March 2007
  • Wow, no garbage collect? That's pretty rediculous. Ya, Java's pretty cool, way better than Scheme, but I think my favorite so far has been Python. --Zm73 08 March 2007
  • Ah, yes I've heard good things about it but sadly have no first hand experience. --Ott0 10 March 2007

Hello, I'm Fine

Holy... I'm totally 100% fine. I'm so sorry to my parents and Jono and everybody. I had no idea that this would happen and I have been very irresponsible. I was just in Shenzhen and I met some skaters and bought a skateboard and have just been skating every day and living in this hostel and I didn't think to check in. My parents haven't been sleeping and the police have been notified and they thought I was kidnapped.. I was supposed to be back in my home city Hangzhou to start school around the 26th of last month but I was feeling all cool and like ah hell I'll be a little late for school cuz I'm having a blast here being a skating punk, and I still don't see a problem with being late for school but the problem was that I didn't check in, which was really really stupid. So again I'm really sorry.

--Ott0 06 March 2007

I'm glad you're all right OB. -EKN

I am too. Does this mean you are going to show us some sweet tricks when you get back? Also, where are you going to school? Much Love. -Zarkov Atreas

I used to skate hardcore in 8th and 9th grade. I can still do the basics, which is cool. But back then it killed my knees so I'm trying not to ollie off high stuff anymore. And I'm going to school at Zhejiang University for a semester just to study mandarin (3 hrs per day). It's kinda crazy, like I could go to school here for four years to get my bachelor's degree for the price of one year at berkeley. And Zhejiang University is ranked number 3 in china. Damned good school. --Ott0 07 March 2007

Dude, it's great to hear from you again. And if you ever do that again I will shit on your face. --Zm73 07 March 2007

That might actually be kinda fun. I could wear a blindfold and you could eat a penny first and see if I can find it with my tongue. --Ott0 18 March 2007

  • My apologies, right after I posted that I realized how out-of-bounds it was. --Ott0 18 March 2007
    • yeah... I for one am utterly disgusted. -EKN
      • Congratulations you took that way too far. --169.229.110.145 19 March 2007

Actually, Z.A. and Zm73 submit quite often, as do Kris and Kelllllly, just not February. --Conservative Joe 01 March 2007

Might I ask why I'm on here? I try to submit whenever I can, though it's not as often as I would like. --Threepaths 03 March 2007

Yeah, well I just made the list for this month, but you're right, the people who submit often should be excused. I mean look at me, I hardly ever submit cuz I'm too lazy. As per requests I deleted some more people. --Ott0 06 March 2007

  • yeah, user: Bucket really has to step it up -EKN
    • You couldn't tar and feather John Drake if you tried.

Everyone, rumor has it that he'll be coming back on Thursday, so take this as a 3 day warning. --Conservative Joe 21 August 2007
