Drinking Urine

Apparently, drinking urine is not only a practice of Kevin Costner in the movie Waterworld, but people of all ages and from all cultures are interested in this practice because of curiousity, cultural practices, or for sexual stimulation.

The only time I had heard of pee going somewhere other than the toilet or a bush before was my dad telling me about "golden showers", trying to explain some phrase or scene I had come into contact with. I was under the impression that this was some 60s fad, but realized otherwise when reading a thread on shortnews.com.

The thread was about Alan Patton of Ohio, who was arrested after hiding cups in child-sized urinals, turning off the water system, and then drinking what he collected [1].

By googling "drinking urine", I found that Alan Patton isn't the only one in our society intrigued by this practice [2]. Seventeen-year-olds are foaming at the mouth...

I was disgusted, and wanted to know more about this strange ritual. I found that Indian holy men have been drinking urine for thousands of years, along with Alaskans using pee as antiseptic, as well as East Africans and Japanese bathing in it.

Perhaps drinking urine is vomit-inducing, but it does have its health benefits. Pee contains urokinase, which is an enzyme used in heart attack victims to dissolve blod clots.
